Manufacturing Products for the Bioscience Industry

The global demand for equipment in bioscience is experiencing magnificent growth. Laboratory supplies alone have a 34.7 billion dollar value and are projected to rise a minimum of 7.6 percent in the following years. Bioscience itself covers a vast expanse of other industries, Agricultural feedstock and industrial biosciences, bioscience-related distribution, drugs and pharmaceuticals, medical devices and equipment, and research, testing, and medical laboratories.

The manufacturing of these highly specified products requires a stringent certification process and specialized materials, equipment, and facilities. At PFI, we are a leader in the manufacturing bioscience industry tools and equipment.

Industrial Bioscience Product Manufacturing

The bioscience industry only recently emerged into the main stage approximately 20 years ago. However, due to the global effects of the pandemic, bioscience news has experienced exponential growth. Significant advances in bioscience technology have required bioscience manufacturers to evolve in order to keep up with the new requirements. Much attention was drawn to the necessity of specialized products after the outbreak of COVID-19. As the pharmaceutical, scientific & research, and medical industries scrambled to develop a vaccine to combat the pandemic, two of the vaccines produced for mass distribution were of the mRNA type by Pfizer and Moderna.

A requirement of this particular vaccine type required extremely cold temperatures during storage and transportation to remain effective. The demand for the manufacturing specialized ultra-cold freezers and storage units began the great demand for specialized bioscience products. Coinciding with the utra-cold requirements, cryogenic storage products and cryogenic transport products have become a focal point in the manufacturing demands of the bioscience industry.

Bioscience industry trends have also necessitated the manufacturing of bioscience products that use single-use technology. Single-use technology has increased efficiency, mitigated risk, and provided for customized solutions. As advancements continue to improve, so does the potential for manufacturing by being flexible, efficient, and creating productive systems.

“Nobody can touch PFI’s capabilities in fabricating cryogenic corks and plugs. They have been a true partner with us since 1971.” – VP of a major cryogenics equipment company using PFI’s services since 1971.

Lab Equipment Manufacturing

For the manufacturers of lab equipment an extensive set of standards and certifications must be obtained. Two of the essential certifications required in the industry are ISO 9001-2015 and AS9100D and ensure that instruments produced are manufactured with the highest level of accuracy and integrity. Manufacturers achieve such accuracy and integrity by adhering to stringent qualification, calibration, and validation protocols. Medical and pharma equipment is regulated by the Current Good Manufacturing Practices (CGMP) and subject to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) audits and enforcement of the standards used in the manufacturing process.

A specific requirement in the lab equipment manufacturing process is the compliance with cleanroom manufacturing protocols. Industrial parts manufactured for the bioscience industry are often required to follow strict cleanliness guidelines in their final phases of manufacturing, assembly, and testing. Cleanroom specifications fall under the ISO 9001 process certification. A cleanroom environment is subject to monitoring particle integrity, temperature, humidity, and differential pressure.

The Evolution of Biosciences

Bioscience has undergone a constant evolution in the United States during the past 50 years. Bioscience continues to broaden its influence in many other industries. Current trends in the field can be heavily connected to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and in many ways have led to a sharp spike in the growth of the field. Today, cryogenic products and single-use technologies are dominant trends in the industry. Both were fueled by the demands of the pandemic.

In the past few years, we’ve seen the focus shift towards vaccine related technologies such as its storage and transport. Now we are observing the bioscience industry growing in the areas of genomics, open-source communication, proteomics, and synthetic biology. As these topics develop and come to the forefront of the bioscience industry, many topics and technologies await on the horizon.

The Future of Biosciences

The future of bioscience is set to continue to grow and develop for many years to come. The key to the bioscience future is its dynamics. Bioscience is continually evolving with the advent of new innovations. Global markets are also placing greater demands, thus the future for bioscience looks very promising.

Nanobiotechnology and DNA sequencing are areas of research that will plan into the future of bioscience. As the medical manufacturing and pharmaceutical industries seemingly move closer towards a system that is preventative and diagnostic rather than reactively treating the ill, research and develop in bioscience will lead the way.

PFI has worked with bioscience companies that have changed their manufacturing requirements from one year to the next. We are able to keep up with these evolving industries and demands. Give us a call to discuss your bioscience production needs: (610)856-7550
